As a Swiss born American artist, fluent in Mandarin, experienced in living and working in Asia and America, I have an intercultural perspective. My education at the State University of New York, School of Art + Design, at Purchase College, provided me a close vicinity to the city which gave me the setting to become a contemporary "flâneur" a man of the crowd.
I consider my current work as tools for reflection upon the dark side of modern society. They are a reaction to the global economic crisis over the last decade, which devastated my family. Neo-social realism with a surrealistic spin helps me investigate the corrupt side of capitalism, corporate greed, war, and, especially, the loss of innocence. These themes of social dysfunction are charged with my childhood memories and the current state of middle class America. The offspring of synthesizing my internal and external circumstances is this current body of work.
Interdisciplinary interests have dispersed my practice among a number of mediums. Currently I am most interested in narrative painting. My paintings are also immensely informed by making sculptures of the people that have had an impact on me. American Social Realism, Balthus and Max Ernst have influenced me, and my current work owes a debt to Neo Rauch and the Leipzig school. By positioning myself in the art world using strong narrative painting with historical awareness I hope to be part of pioneering the next wave of figurative painting internationally.
